EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
