Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
